Scientifica are currently looking for a mechanical design engineer who can demonstrate past success in product design and development to work in the cutting-edge field of scientific instrumentation and precision engineering. The right candidate will have experience of developing high quality products from concept through to full scale production and after sales support.

Main Duties

  • Work closely with the optical and electronic engineers on forming new design concepts and taking ownership of mechanical design throughout the lifecycle of products
  • Work closely with other departments such as sales, manufacturing and business development to present ideas and designs and report on progress
  • Cad design of bespoke microscopy, motion and platform solutions and modifications of existing designs
  • Prototype assembly and preparation of assembly instructions, working with production engineering on transfer to production
  • Work with the purchasing department and directly with suppliers on finding cost effective manufacturing solutions

Essential Skills and Abilities

  • Qualified to degree level in Mechanical engineering (preferably MSc level but BSc will be considered)
  • Ideally significant experience in similar field
  • Expert in Solidworks and EPDM (EPDM admin knowledge will be advantageous)
  • Relevant experience in optics handling/mounting, high precision motion control
  • Experience on design components for CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication
  • Knowledge and understanding of drawing standards and geometric tolerances
  • Understanding of EMC issues
  • Experience on DFM/DFA procedures
  • Experience of finishing on metalwork parts (e.g. anodising, Alocrom, paint etc.)
  • Experience on design for small volume production
  • Documentation skills- MS Office, Design databases
  • Experience on phase stage project procedure
  • Understanding of cost reduction strategies
  • Ability to work on own initiative in a small multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate and present ideas to other engineers and across the business
  • Strong organisational skills to be able to work on multiple concurrent projects
  • Some practical hands-on experience in mechanical engineering would be beneficial

Full time, Monday to Friday.
